Summer is all about going lighter and taking off layers.
When we think of the summer we think light, fresh and fun. It is a time to get outside, get active, vacation, and have fun. Summer brings on a whole array of skin concerns including extra breakouts and unwanted pigmentation. We support a healthy skincare routine all year long but sometimes some simple but effective switches from winter to summer can make all the difference in achieving that radiant, summer glow. Does this sound like something you need? Well, keep reading while we divulge our favorite summer skincare routine.
Proper skin preparation, aka using a cleanser and toner, is an essential part of a healthy skin routine and should not be taken lightly. Cleansing is the first and arguably the MOST important part of your skin care routine. It will help to remove makeup, dirt, oil, and debris while also preparing your skin for optimal ingredient absorption.
Our recommendation: DermaCleanser and DermaTonic
DermaCleanser is a non-foaming gel that will remove all impurities without stripping the skin of its natural oils. It also contains antioxidants, decongestants, and calming ingredients so your skin will feel clean, but never tight.
DermaTonic is a refreshing alcohol-free toner that restores the pH of the skin and helps support a healthy skin barrier. It is infused with antioxidants Vitamin C and Green Tea to help combat free radical damage, which can be higher in the summer months. We also suggest using this throughout the day to refresh your skin. Pro tip: It can also be applied over makeup.
Exfoliation. This goes hand in hand with a proper skin preparation. While in the winter we tell you to slow down with the exfoliation due to the increase of sensitivity and water loss within the skin. In the summer, we want you to exfoliate more. The excess oil and debris sitting on the skin can make it hard for your other skincare products to penetrate into the skin effectively. Exfoliating will help to keep breakouts and pigmentation at bay.
Our recommendation: DermaScrub
This gentle and versatile scrub is made with Diatomaceous Earth (a marine fossil-rich in silica) to achieve an effective, yet safe exfoliation. It also contains papaya enzymes to act like pac man on the surface of the skin, gently eating away dead surface cells and moisturizers to help hydrate the skin.
An all-in-one serum. We get it, summertime is BUSY so we are all for those multipurpose products that are going to treat multiple skin concerns in one sweet bottle. Anti-aging, Antioxidant, and Hydrating Serum.
Our recommendation: Nanosphere Bio-Serum
This multitasking serum is formulated with a unique combination of ingredients that will provide the skin with intense hydration, anti-aging and antioxidant benefits. This serum is KEY to keeping skin looking young, healthy and radiant.
A lightweight moisturizer. There is nothing worse in the summer than a heavier moisturizer, especially during the day when we are most active. Don’t be scared to switch out your moisturizer during the summer months for something light and effective. And we know what you are going to say “I don’t like to wear a moisturizer in the summer because my skin already feels so oily”. By properly hydrating your skin, it will signal to your skin that it is balanced and your oil production will actually decrease. You still NEED a moisturizer in the summer.
Our recommendation: Hydra Q-10
This lightweight, simple but effective moisturizer is the perfect choice for summer. It contains squalene to help support a healthy skin barrier, antioxidants, and vitamins to support healthy skin and moisturize without feeling heavy or greasy.
Last but not least, SPF all day everyday. During the summer months the UV rays are at its peak and we are more likely to burn and be more susceptible to sun damage. You need an SPF to protect your skin ALL year long. But this is extremely important in the summer. SPF is your most important product in your skincare routine. Don’t forget to reapply your SPF every 2 hours. Now, we know what you are going to say, “I have SPF in my makeup.” That is NOT enough. You need an actual SPF.
Our recommendation: DermaSun SPF 50.
This lightweight, non-comedogenic sunscreen is 100% physical, with no chemical filters. It is suitable for all skin types and beautiful under makeup. It also contains aloe vera and chamomile to calm the skin and reduce inflammation, and antioxidants and vitamins to support overall skin health.
Some other summer skincare tips:
- Don’t forget to put SPF on your lips. Yes, they can burn and it’s painful.
- Wear a hat to protect your skin, especially if you have melasma or any type of pigmentation.
- Seek shade whenever possible.
- Go lighter on the makeup. Sweating can cause your makeup to come off and look worse. Going lighter will allow your skin to breathe and will prevent excess breakouts.
- When exfoliating, don’t forget your body too! This should be done 1-2 times a week.
