Spring is the perfect time of year to give your skin some much-needed love after the harsh, dry winter. After months of cold temperatures and snow, winter can leave your skin looking and feeling dull, dry, and itchy.
Here are 6 ways to awaken your dull winter complexion and bring back that warm weather glow for Spring.
- Exfoliate
All winter our skin has been dry and flaky so if you haven’t been exfoliating during the winter months, it is time you start. If you already have been, it may be time to increase the frequency or add in a new type of exfoliant (ex. chemical). As the weather warms up and it gets more humid our skin can start to tolerate an increase in both physical (mechanical beads that scrub the surface of the skin) and chemical exfoliation. This is also the perfect time to reach out to your esthetician about getting a treatment or a series of chemical peels. Chemical peels are a great way to refresh your skin for spring and will help even texture and tone, reduce pigmentation and minimize fine lines and wrinkles. But be careful not to overdo it by using too many methods of exfoliation at once. Over-exfoliating can lead to dry, itchy, irritated skin. We recommend exfoliating 1-2x a week with our DermaScrub to keep your skin looking bright and healthy.
2.Switch to a lightweight moisturizer
Our rich, heavy creams save our skin in the winter but as the weather warms up they can leave you feeling greasy, clog your pores and have your makeup looking less than fresh. An easy fix for this is switching out your moisturizer for something a little lighter. One that will hydrate your skin effectively but not feel too heavy or thick on the skin. Water-based, hyaluronic acid-based, or gel-based ones are perfect for the springtime. Of course, we always recommend speaking to your Skin Advisor to look at your skin and suggest the best moisturizer for your own skin type and conditions.
3. Don’t forget about your SPF
Even though you are supposed to wear your SPF all year long. We know that some people get a little relaxed with it in the winter. Springtime is the perfect time to get back into the habit of wearing it every single morning. Our pick is DermaSun SPF 50 which is perfect for the warmer temperatures. But don’t forget to reapply as the days get longer! If you are going to spend a lot of time in the sun, double your protection by wearing a hat. We like to have one handy in our cars so we always have that extra layer of protection when we need it.
4. Antioxidants, Antioxidants, Antioxidants
Another way to help protect your skin during the warmer weather and the increase of sun exposure is using skincare and/or products that are rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants will help to minimize any free radical damage within the skin caused by the harsh UV rays. They will also help with reducing pigmentation, sun damage, and premature aging. Antioxidants are key to keeping your skin looking young, fresh, and healthy. Although antioxidants are important all year long, Spring is a great time to add them in, if you haven’t already. Our pick is Derma C which contains both vitamin C and vitamin E. Two of the best antioxidants on the market.
5.Deep Clean your beauty space
While you are refreshing your house give your linen closet a makeover. Wash and organize your towels, throw out or use your old beat-up towels as rags and invest in some new plush face cloths for your skin. Then give all your beauty tools a good clean. Disinfect your makeup brushes, sponges, and tweezers. Even better, get on a routine of doing it weekly. Makeup brushes can have unwanted germs and viruses in them and can cause acne and breakouts. Washing them regularly can keep your skin looking clear. Wash your bedding and pillowcases. Invest in another set of pillowcases and get in the habit of changing them out 1-2x a week. More if you are acne-prone. Take a look at our complete collection of cleaners to see which one is right for you.
6.Don’t forget to Hydrate
As the weather warms up, we tend to forget to hydrate since we aren’t noticing those dry, flaky patches anymore. But it is still SO important, yes, even if you are oily and acne-prone. Your skin needs hydration to feel balanced. If you are not properly hydrating your skin, it can cause your skin to over produce oil and can lead to breakouts. Hyaluronic acid is a great way to add extra hydration into your skincare routine as it is water-based and our bodies produce it naturally. Our Hyaluronic Acid Plus serum contains 3 different molecular weights of hyaluronic acid so it will penetrate into the skin effectively. Don’t forget to increase your water intake too!
